To better understand what CBD is and what role it plays in skin care, we talked to nutritional practitioner, skin therapist and former Skin stitut director Fiona Tuck.

CBD, allegedly providing a variety of nutritional and therapeutic benefits, is also spruiked as an inflammation therapy.

“Cannabidiol or ‘CBD’ oil is derived from the flowers and buds of cannabis plants. CBD contains very little THC, the psychoactive cannabinoid usually associated with marijuana,” Tuck states.

“To suppress inflammation, CBD is thought to interact with brain and immune receptors.”

Since both CBD and hemp oil are derived from the same plant, they are sometimes misused interchangeably.
“CBD oil isn’t the same as hemp oil. CBD oil and hemp oil are sometimes sold the same way, but CBD oil contains rich cannabidiol sources, hemp oil contains small quantities of cannabidiol,” says Tuck.

“To know you’re really buying CBD oil, look for ‘cannabidiol’ or ‘cannabis sativa seed oil’ on the label versus ‘extract’ or ‘hemp-derived oil’.”

Other CBD oil synonyms include: full-spectrum hemp extract, phyto-cannabinoid-rich hemp oil, hemp oil and hemp CBD.

Although CBD oil has long been hailed for its ability to alleviate chronic pain and treat anxiety, it remains relatively new in skin care. As far as its supposed skin benefits go, its antioxidant-rich profile could act as a potential treatment for several skin conditions.

“Because of its soothing ability, adding CBD oil to skin care can potentially improve inflammatory skin conditions like eczema, rosacea, psoriasis, acne and reactive skin,” says Tuck.

“CBD oil also acts as an antioxidant, shielding skin cells from oxidative stress and inflammation, thereby helping protect the skin from fine lines and premature ageing.”

Not all CBD oil products are equivalent. Tuck suggests paying special attention to the ingredient label to ensure, first, that it is truly a CBD oil product and that it contains enough of the ingredient to make an effect.
“If you’re really buying CBD oil, look for ‘cannabidiol’ or ‘cannabis sativa seed oil’ on the label versus ‘extract’ or hemp oil,” says Tuck.

“The activity and efficacy of the product also depends on how much of the ingredient it actually contains, so always check the percentage of cannabis sativa oil in the actual product. If the right type and dosage of CBD oil is used, there are possible health benefits for the skin. I suggest searching for around 100 mg to 250 mg as a rough guide.

Australian laws officially classify CBD oil as Schedule 4 substance. This means that only a doctor can prescribe it for qualifying patients diagnosed with such disorders and as such is not yet available on Australian beauty counters. Hemp oil is legally available.

Once decriminalised in Australia, we should expect to see CBD oil appear not only in skin care, but in food, hair products, sleep aids and as medicine.

However, the goods are legal in most of Australia, though laws do vary between states
